VSTBalance Basics: System Checks, Tips & Tricks

Ben Kruger Ben Kruger

This Article will review best practices when using your VSTBalance system and also walk you through what to do when you see certain errors. The contents are as follows:

Environmental Check

Ensure that the area near your VSTBalance system:

  • Has a minimum of 14 feet of space in front of the sensor
  • Is away from windows and mirrors
  • Has minimal sunlight interference
  • Has proper flooring such as light carpet or light wood. Avoid tiling and dark or reflective flooring. If needed, we can provide a gray floor mat to fix issues that may arise from the flooring

System Check

Perform a quick check to make sure your VSTBalance is good to go:

  • Ensure that the sensor shelf 29-30" off the floor as denoted in your instructions
  • Bring the sensor to the front edge of the shelf
  • Ensure that the wheels are locked when the system is not in motion
  • Check that all cables are properly connected including power, HDMI, and sensor cables
  • If you are using a floor mat, ensure that it is properly installed with no bumps or folds
  • Ensure the remote receiver (FLIRC) is visible

Dress Code

Those being tested should avoid these clothing options to improve sensor performance:

  • Shiny or slightly reflective pants
  • Baggy, loose, or dark clothing
  • Shiny or leather shoes
  • Long skirts, kilts, and dresses

Other Recommendations

Here are additional recommendations for people being assessed or trained:

  • Use fists to ensure hand visibility. This can be beneficial in assessments like Functional Reach or training games such as Veggie Slicer.
  • While in use, the person being tested should maintain a minimum 3-foot distance from the sensor to ensure that their feet are constantly visible.
  • Make sure you select the patient on the device prior to starting a test. One individual should be green on the left side of the screen. You can use the arrow buttons on your remote to select the correct person.
  • Assistive Devices can be used during the assessments; however, be sure that there are no bags or other objects hanging in front of the patient's legs as this will obstruct the sensor’s view and cause issues with the accuracy of the test.
  • Rollators should not be used as assistive devices as the chair will block the resident’s knees and cause the same issues listed in the previous bullet point.

  1. Check the environment such as if you are in a new room, dark flooring and an abundance of sunlight coming through nearby windows.
  2. Is the resident wearing black pants, a dress or bagging clothing?  Have the resident change clothing and retry the screening.
  3. Instruct the patient to wave their hands or move their legs to be seen by the sensor.
  4. If the patient is in a wheelchair, ensure there is nothing blocking the view of the patient. Ensure they have their feet on the floor when starting up the assessment.

VSTBalance Cannot See Floor Error

  1. Make sure the sensor is on the front edge of the shelf.
  2. Make sure the sensor is between 29 - 30 inches off the floor. This should be the middle black marked line on the front of the silver VSTBalance stand.
  3. If there is a lot of sunlight coming into the room, please close the window blinds.
  4. Restart the assessment or training once these changes are made and see if it resolves the issue.
  5. The sensor works best on a light-colored floor.  If the floor is dark and or has a shiny finish, the sensor will have difficulty reading the floor.  Relocate the sensor to an area that has a lighter floor coloring.
  6. If you are still having issues, please contact your Client Partner or VSTBalance Helpdesk at (855) 443 5744 ext. 3.
